The impact of the GATS on the competitiveness of Qatari banks 1995-2001

This study analyzes the impact of the GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) on the competitiveness of the Qatari banking sector and provides a set of recommendations to improve its efficiency. This study helps in understanding the general principles and rules of the GATS and the schedules of horizontal and specific obligations related to the banking sector. The study sheds light on how these commitments will help liberalize and increase the competitiveness of the Qatari banking sector. Moreover, this study provides an assessment of the performance of the banking sector before and after joining the World Trade Organization on the one hand, and its performance compared to similar sectors in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries in 1996 and 2000 on the other hand.
